The film has been lauded for its accurate portrayal of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer’s life and its examination of both the human and scientific toll of the Manhattan Project, the research programme that developed the atomic bomb in the 1940s at Los Alamos in New Mexico.

To ensure the film was as accurate as possible, director Christopher Nolan turned to several science advisers for information on Oppenheimer and his life, and the project itself, which culminated in the Trinity Bomb nuclear test on 16 July 1945 and the subsequent bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, bringing the Second World War to a close at immense human cost.

Nature spoke to three of those advisers for some behind-the-scenes insight into the film’s creation.

Robbert Dijkgraaf, a theoretical physicist and currently the Dutch minister for education, was the director of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, from 2012 to 2022, a job Oppenheimer had also held, from 1947 to1966.

Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, is a close friend of Nolan’s and had worked with him on a number of previous projects, including the depiction of the gargantuan black hole in the film Interstellar (2014).

And David Saltzberg, a physicist at the University of California, Los Angeles, worked as a scientific consultant for other productions, such as The Big Bang Theory, before applying his expertise to Oppenheimer.

What was your involvement in Oppenheimer?

Dijkgraaf:

In 2021, Nolan wanted to come and visit, to see the place where Oppenheimer had lived and worked for almost 20 years. I also lived in that house and, for 10 years, worked in the same office that Oppenheimer once used. We had a long discussion about Oppenheimer, but also about physics, which I loved.

Thorne:

I spoke with Cillian Murphy about his portrayal of Oppenheimer for the movie. I knew Oppenheimer when I was a graduate student at Princeton, from 1962 to 1965, and a postdoc from 1965 to 1966, so there was some discussion about Oppenheimer as a person.

Saltzberg:

I was called in to help out with the production in scenes that were filmed in Los Angeles. I worked mostly with the prop manager. That involved things like deciding what was on the chalkboards, or what equations Oppenheimer handed to Einstein to show whether the atmosphere would catch fire.

Tell us about some of your interactions with the director and cast

Dijkgraaf:

Nolan visited Princeton twice to tour the premises. I remember we walked from the house to the institute. It’s this beautiful walk with nice trees. I remember telling him it’s the perfect commute, because Einstein and [Austrian physicist] Kurt Gödel always walked along that path. In the movie, Lewis Strauss meets Oppenheimer and he points out the house and says “it’s the perfect commute”. I thought, ‘wait a moment - this is a very familiar scene!’

I was struck that Nolan was really, really interested in what it means to be a physicist.

I also remember he really appreciated the pond at the institute. Quite a few of the scenes in the movie are shot near the pond - it’s a favourite place for many people there. It’s a place to think and contemplate.

Saltzberg:

I sometimes had to explain the physics of a line of dialogue to the actors, enough that they knew the emotional truth of the line and why they were saying it. There was one particular line in the script which was incredibly complicated, about off -diagonal matrix elements and quantum mechanics. Even when I read it I had trouble understanding exactly what it was saying. Cillian really wanted me to explain it to him. We got there, I think, but it was difficult.

A similar thing happened with Josh Hartnett, who played [American nuclear physicist] Ernest Lawrence. Every time he had a spare moment, he would come and talk to me about physics. It was uncanny because he was already in makeup and costume. I never met Lawrence, but I’ve seen plenty of pictures, and it was just eerie. He looked like Lawrence walking around the room.

What did you make of the science in the movie?

Saltzberg:

It was wonderfully accurate. It’s really amazing. Christopher Nolan clearly understood the science. There’s a scene in which Oppenheimer is writing on the chalkboard explaining that nuclear fission is impossible, when Lawrence walks in and says “well, [American physicist Luis Walter] Alvarez just did it next door”. So I had some equations put on the board that Oppenheimer might have had that proved fission is impossible. Most of the audience wouldn’t recognize that, but it made me feel good.

Dijkgraaf:

It was really well done. I loved that the movie consistently looks through the eyes of Oppenheimer. The physics discussions were very good — the right equations were on the blackboards!

What was Oppenheimer like as a person?

Thorne:

He was just a superb mentor, extremely effective. He had enormous breadth and an extremely quick mind. He had this amazing ability to grasp things very quickly and see connections, which was a major factor in his success as the leader of the atomic bomb project.

Dijkgraaf:

He was both a scientific leader and a government adviser. At that time, Einstein, who was quite crucial in starting up the atomic bomb project, really turned into a father of the peace movement. A character who wasn’t in the movie, [Hungarian-American mathematician] John von Neumann, wanted to bomb the Soviet Union, so he was completely on the opposite side. Oppenheimer was trying to walk the reasonable path between those two extremes, and he was punished for it. So I often feel his character generates these mixed feelings. It’s a fascinating example for anyone who wants to be a scientist and play a role in public debate.

Is it satisfying to see a science-based film get such recognition at the Oscars?

Thorne:

It’s wonderful it’s got this level of attention. It’s a film that has messages that are tremendously important for the era we’re in. Hopefully it raises the awareness of the danger of nuclear weapons and the History

Nuclear physics crucial issue of arms control.

Dijkgraaf:

We often complain there’s no content in popular culture. For me, the biggest surprise was that this difficult movie about a difficult topic and a difficult man, shot in a difficult way, became a hit around the world. I feel that’s very encouraging. The hidden life of physicists has become a part of popular culture, and rightly so.

doi: https://doi.org/10.1038/d41586-024-00715-3
Mike Petershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03407968596060908974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187999822328246617.post-18470619812137440772019-11-27T08:23:00.003+13:002019-11-27T08:26:11.821+13:00Watch How Roger Deakins Shot '1917' All In One TakeI think the use of long single takes in a movie are fantastic. The film '1917' directed by Sam Mendes uses this extensively. The film about WW1 will be released this Christmas. I haven't seen this film, so don't have an opinion about it, but the shots look amazing.

The cinematographer is the master of the art Roger Deakins.

Molecular Maya (mMaya)

"A free plugin for Autodesk Maya that lets users import, model and animate molecular structures. We leverage the power and flexibility of Maya while offering innovative, intuitive tools specialized for the challenges of molecular modelling and animation. mMaya is further enhanced by a series of 'kits' that expand its functionality and greatly streamline molecular modelling, animation, and simulation (see below)."
Clarafi gives a list of many software tools that can be used for Scientific Visualisation. I think it is all rather fabulous.

Clarafi has a showcase of great examples of animations.

Here is an example of the animation "What is a Protein" from the Protein Data Bank. I think it is the best introduction to proteins I have ever come across.

The Protein Data Bank is a source of data in XML format to use with animation software.

My cloud software project has a couple of modules that work with the Protein Data Bank.

Here is a great animation of the growth of a chicken embryo.
The most stunning scientific animation of a cell I have ever watched is Inner Life of the Cell.

"The Inner Life of a Cell is an eight-minute animation created in NewTek LightWave 3D and Adobe After Effects for Harvard biology students",

"Created by XVIVO, a scientific animation company near Hartford, CT, the animation illustrates unseen molecular mechanisms and the ones they trigger, specifically how white blood cells sense and respond to their surroundings and external stimuli."Mike Petershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03407968596060908974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187999822328246617.post-58948658479833305632019-05-05T08:17:00.001+12:002019-05-05T09:02:37.658+12:00Toy Soldiers - Behind the Scenes at Stan Winston"Go behind the scenes of Joe Dante’s Small Soldiers and see how Stan Winston Studio used real puppets and on-set performance to bring to life the militarized Action Figures."

Since then various artists and model makers have come up with ways to improve this by adding Glycerine.

The resulting Gelatin/Glycerine mixture (without water) is gently melted and poured around a "master" shape to create a reusable flexible mould. The mould can later be melted down and reused many times.

I have also come across a miniature model makers recipe that added Sorbitol to the Gelatine Glycerine mix in equal 1/3 portions. However, non-food grade Sorbitol powder is impossible to obtain in NZ in bulk. It does come with 50% water added for use in the Dairy Industry in milking sheds. $600 for 200L which then has to be processed to remove the unwanted water.

So a Gelatine Glycerine mix looks to be the way to go.

I'm now confident enough to start to move these projects to the predevelopment stage.

But to do this, I need a hell of a lot of funds to rent space, pay for great scriptwriters, researchers and designers etc.

And I want to have a top-notch crew, rather than rely on favours.

Also, I would rather risk my own money than someone else's.

And have minimal dealings with the film and TV industry suits who suck in my opinion and have no taste.

To this end, I'm taking a detour and returning to software development after an absence of 10 years. Previously I led a team for 10 years on a private cloud computing platform for conservation in NZ. It was technically successful but not financially. Mainly because it was 20 years ahead of its time. It was just too early and I got some things wrong.

But as it turned out, it was an invaluable learning opportunity for me. So I was very lucky and got some hard-won experience.

Cloud computing has come along way since that time and a lot has been learned across the industry.

Recently out of sheer frustration with available software, I have had to build my own applications to support my own private projects.

Then the penny dropped ...

Other people might need the same tools and maybe they would pay for that service.

I'm now developing a scientific cloud platform to be commercialised. After 18 months, it is at a crude working prototype stage which I'm very happy with. The next stage will be very very hard.

My intention is that this will be a fundraiser for my film projects.

You can follow this project on a separate technical web site aimed at developers.

In the meanwhile, Redworks is my happy place and I'll be still pottering around in my art studio from time to time and posting away on www.redworks.co.nz.Mike Petershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03407968596060908974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187999822328246617.post-4252479650371797602019-04-01T13:56:00.001+13:002019-04-01T15:43:50.420+13:00Build an Amazing Tree with Luke TowanHere is a great set of instructions on how to make a miniature tree from Luke Towan.

Here is Luke making the tree.

Here it is broken down into a series of steps

I used some of this technique a couple of years ago to make a miniature tree used in a film that also matched a full-scale fake tree used on set for the actors to interact with. The miniature tree was filmed against a blue screen.

It looks magical.

As reported in Design Week in an article written by Sarah Dawood November 20, 2018 5:23 pm.

"Playing with Scale: How Designers Use Set Models looks at how stage designers for the National Theatre have used model boxes to help inform entire sets, and will feature original model boxes used in the theatre's productions, archive materials, films, audio and photography.

As described in an article on National Theatre

"This free exhibition explores how designers use set models for theatre-making. Playing with Scale unfolds the idea of a scale model and explains the importance of models as a design tool. The exhibition features examples of models from five productions designed for the Olivier stage between 1977-2018 and explores how these intricate models are used in the process of theatre-making. Production models include Exit the King, Antony and Cleopatra, The Life of Galileo, Antigone and The Comedy of Errors.

The exhibition includes archive materials, films, audio, images and set models. The exhibition is curated by Eleanor Margolies, who has been the Jocelyn Herbert Fellow of Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Graduate School, University of the Arts London, and is designed by Jemima Robinson. This exhibition is the outcome of the Jocelyn Herbert Fellowship (2016-18) and forms part of a collaboration between the National Theatre and Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon. The exhibition is funded in part by the Rootstein Hopkins Foundation."
I learn film making by reverse engineering DVD's of movies and doco's in my head as I watch them play. Figuring out how the scenes are lit. What crane was used and how it tracked. Where the camera was placed. What lenses were used and why? How the actors moved. How the scene was composed.

The second source has been reading every ASC magazine from cover to cover and then reading them again.

The third source has been watching "The making of" docos that are often included on DVD's. And reading any books that come with the film. I now have a great and growing collection of these books mainly purchased used from Amazon and library surplus book sales.

The fourth source has been watching YouTube-style videos from web sites like Stan Winston School of Character Arts, BAFTA, Weta Workshop, etc and today Wolfcrow.

So here is a great video description from Wolfcrow of some of Roger Deakins methods. Roger is probably my favourite cinematographer.

And work by Christopher Nolan.
He has a wonderful website that I found very useful for drawing and making model sets.

He is a real teacher. As described on his web site.

"I am, quite simply put, a maker and a teacher of making. That may neatly embrace a lot of what I do, but it doesn’t really touch the heart of my interests or intentions. Having struggled for a long time to find a better job description, the one that I think I’m most comfortable with at the moment is .. practical investigator!

My own ‘making’ encompasses sculpture, model-making, painting, graphic work and design. My ‘teaching’ involves undergraduate or post-graduate lecturing/tutoring both here (England) and abroad; running my own short courses, whether independently or hosted by institutions; writing instructional books and articles. I am, for example, author of the (fairly successful) book Model-making: Materials and Methods and this WordPress site is meant to be a continuation or an ‘update’ of it.

Here is a list of the places/courses where I either work regularly or have given workshops/masterclasses to date:

Wimbledon College of Art, BA (Hons) Set Design for Screen, BA (Hons) Technical Arts & Special Effects, MA Theatre Design; Rose Bruford College, BA (Hons) Theatre Design; Central Saint Martins, BA (Hons) Performance Design and Practice, MA Performance Design and Practice, Foundation Art and Design; Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, MA Theatre Design; Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, BA (Hons) Theatre and Performance Design; Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, MA Theatre Design; National Film and Television School, MA Production Design; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; National Gallery, London; Microsoft Mobile (formerly Nokia) London South Bank University, BA (Hons) Architecture; Aalto University School of Art and DesignHelsinki, BA Scenography; Royal Central School of Speech and Drama BA (Hons) Theatre Practice Design for Performance"

This web site has a lot of very useful instructions on model making in general. Most of it revolves around how to make model railway scenery.Mike Petershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03407968596060908974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187999822328246617.post-91318037461291580322017-07-25T13:59:00.000+12:002017-08-13T12:20:06.567+12:00An Exhibition Thank YouI would like to thank all the family, friends and neighbours who visited the recent Mt Chocolate exhibition
to have a look, showed a lot of curiosity and got Mike thinking even
more. 150 visited the exhibition during the week which was a good
turnout given the location. In addition 20 attended (child and a parent
together) a creative workshop by Mike for dyslexic minds.

Thanks are also given to;

Ari Edgecombe, Jan Ormsby, Frazer Murdoch, Steve Solomon and Elaine Matheson from the South Alive Arts Group for help with arranging and setting up the exhibition.

Nikki Aaron and Cress Evans from the office, Peggy Peek and Margaret Cook and the other South Alive
Trustees for making the gallery available. Peggy for her wonderful
welcome to guests at the opening.

Chris Cole of Dyslexia Support Southland for organising the creative workshop for dyslexic children with their parents.

Chris Dawson from Lego Users Group South (SouthLUG) for the loan of a big bucket of 20Kg of Lego bricks.

Then I make drawings. Usually the models are fully designed in my head in 3D before I even start. The models are for testing, tweaking, sharing with others. The models aren't precious - more like doodles.

I have done this for the last 40 years. Sculpted portraits of people are also done in my head before I pick up some clay. It makes it all very enjoying because I can then work from imagination and dreams.

When I worked in engineering for many years, welding and fabricating, I found I was able to look at drawings and build a 3D model in my head before starting work. A portable set of plans!

I design sets, landscaping, IT systems etc this way.

It drives other people nuts because they can't see what's going on till a model appears.

The recent Mt Chocolate - The Exhibition was put on for family, friends and neighbours. They were bugging me with questions about why I was doing the landscaping first and building last. And what were all the yellow pegs for!

Mt Chocolate is the name we have given our piece of land where we are planting a future native swamp forest reserve and building a home and art studio.

During the last week plenty of family, friends and neighbours came and had a look at the models, drawings, photos, and the beginnings of a handmade book about the project.

Here are some photos taken by Greg Fordyce during a recent club visit by members of the Southland model Engineers to have a look at the models. Thanks Greg !
I had never watch it before but had heard of it.

It is simply magnificent. In my opinion the best TV drama series to come out of the USA with The Sopranos in a close second.

I like everything about it - The opening sequence, the magnificent character acting, the lighting, the scripts, costumes and camera moves.

From US National Archives YouTube Channel here is "Inspired by Nelson Johnson’s New York Times best-selling book, HBO re-created the realism and texture of Prohibition-era Atlantic City in the hit series Boardwalk Empire. With video clips and behind-the-scenes stories, Terence Winter leads a discussion of the show’s creation. Panelists include Gretchen Mol, the actress who played Gillian Darmody; Edward McGinty, Jr., the actor who portrayed Ward Boss Boyd and research adviser for the show; Lesley Robson-Foster, visual effects supervisor; Nelson Johnson, author of Boardwalk Empire; and others."

From his website

"Michael Paul Smith's Elgin Park:
A 1/24th-scale recreation of everyday scenes from mid-20th century America, ranging from the 1920s to the mid-1960s

What started as an exercise in model-making and photography became a dreamlike reconstruction of the town Michael grew up in. It's not an exact recreation, but it does capture the mood and feel of his memories.

Photos posted on Flickr went viral, attracting millions of visitors from around the world. Michael's work has since been featured by media around the world.
The buildings are constructed of resin-coated paper, styrene plastic, and basswood, plus numerous found objects. The vehicles are from Michael's collection of 300+ commercially produced, diecast models.

No Photoshop was used in these images; they're all composed in the camera. It is the oldest trick in the special effects book: lining up a model with an appropriate background, then photographing it"Mike Petershttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03407968596060908974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8187999822328246617.post-56183683128439149452017-07-18T09:41:00.002+12:002017-07-18T09:41:25.661+12:00Making of Hogworts Castle minatureWhile still having fun in England, Fellow Southland Model Engineers members, Eric and Pam Shackel have had the chance to visit the amazing 1/24th scale model of Hogwarts Castle used for exterior shots in every ‘Harry Potter’ movie. A short time-lapse of the making of this huge model is here.

The time worked out to build this model with the 86 artists and crew members equated to 74 years and it is 50 feet across filled with 2500 fibre optic lights.
Not knowng how to sew - where do I start?

Last week I heard an interesting interview on National Radio about a film The life of Zac Posen: Sandy Chronopoulos. "The House of Z is a film following the meteoric rise of New York fashion
designer Zac Posen. The film is the debut feature for Sandy Chronopoulos
who spent a year with him to film it."

The interview talked about how Zac learnt how to design by draping fabric on dolls. I thought to myself. That could work for me. Especially if I sculpted the physical form and personalities of the characters first.

"Draping is the art of manipulating fabric directly on the dress form in
three dimensions. It is the most creative way for a designer to turn
design ideas into reality"

A great Youtube interview with Hartford Stage costume designer Barry Sellers explain how he does works up a design by draping fabric on a Mannequin.
Discover the hidden story behind the building of a home and art studio on Mt Chocolate, a new native bush area in Clifton, Invercargill. The exhibition at the South Alive Art Gallery from 16 to 23 July, open 10am - 4pm is by local filmmaker and sculptor Mike Peters. On display will be architectural models, landscape & botanical photography, design and construction drawings and a handmade book of the project.

A creative workshop for Dyslexic students will also be held at the same time in the South Alive Hub taught by Mike and organised by Dyslexia Support Southland.

Design Process
The models on display are working models used to work out the form and proportion of the interconnected buildings, how they sit among the trees and look in the glowing skies. The buildings are to be built by Mike with the help of family and friends for himself and Tracy who left Christchurch after the earthquakes. The art studio will be used for art work for film, theatre and museums.

Mt Chocolate
Mt Chocolate is 1Ha, has been landscaped and is being planted in native plants similar to those found at Seaward Bush and Waituna. A feature of the bush will be Southern Rata surrounding a sphagnum moss wetland and a mosaic of plant communities. The owners will eventually seek legal protection via a QE2 National Trust Covenant.
I got to help Steve Woller with Art Department and it was my breakout debut performance as a STUNT SHADOW twice!
My wife Tracy did crew catering.
It is by Lee Yeung of Beijing & Lustre Effects Studio.

"I'm Lee. Lustre Effects Studio went into operation in the Summer of
2015. It was formed immediately after a gathering with a group of young
artists and professionals. This is due to our common belief that we
should do the things we love provided they are magical and fun-filled.

We
faced a lot of problems in the beginning. Luckily enough, we discovered
from the internet the forums of Stan Winston School Of Character Arts,
where we gained inspirations, knowledge and technical know-how.

Our
workshop is made up of a passionate staff. We gathered all possible
resources to research and learned by trial and error to finally give
birth to our first production of the animatronic gorilla.

Why the
gorilla and not anything else is because through the process of making
it helped us to strengthen not only our skills but our will as well. We
had to overcome difficulties, just to name a few, the complexities of
the skin, the thickness of hair and installing an animatronic device to
make it look awesome and cool.

The animatronic gorilla has yet to
be perfected. But it is a work that bears witness to our keen efforts.
It is only the first step. We will move forward to give our gorilla
companions and build other fascinating creatures to share with you.

Our
studio is an open-ended workshop. We will only be too happy to
communicate and interact with you all. On behalf of my teammates, I
would like to thank you all to let us share our story. Do the things you
love. Just go for it.

Sincerely,

Lee"
